Turnaround Firm Platinum Group Acquires Minneapolis-based Nordquist Sign Company

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (May 10, 2011) — Turnaround firm Platinum Group today announced that its private equity fund has acquired the assets of Nordquist Sign Company, Inc., which has designed, fabricated and serviced signage for businesses and institutions since 1904. Terms were not disclosed.

The firm’s fund, Platinum Group Holdings II, invests in companies in need of capital and turnaround management expertise to restore value.

"Nordquist Sign Company was hit hard by the economic downturn," said Tom Ahonen, managing partner of Platinum Group. "We saw this as an excellent opportunity to invest and apply our turnaround expertise to return the company to a sound financial footing," he said. "In the process, we’re saving jobs and taking a century-long legacy forward."

The new company, Nordquist Holdings, LLC, continues to do business as Nordquist Sign Company and operates out of its facility at 312 West Lake Street in Minneapolis with 16 employees who keep their positions. A former owner of the 107-year-old company, Dick Nordquist Jr., has joined the company’s board of directors.

Ahonen is the new CEO of Nordquist Sign. He recently led the sale of Law Enforcement Targets, Inc. where he was president. He also served as vice president of finance and operations for Elvin Safety. Both companies were private equity investments of Platinum’s fund. Ahonen’s leadership expertise combines finance, operations and information technology.

Nordquist Sign’s new chief operating officer is Kevin Yakes, an associate of Platinum Group with extensive experience in turnaround consulting, manufacturing and engineering.

Nordquist Sign is a designer and fabricator of signage, environment graphics and architectural elements since 1904. The company’s designers and project managers team up with clients to transform their designs into quality, three-dimensional identities at a reasonable price. Featured topic for March: Two Options for Finding Successors

Over 18,000 family or closely held business owners in Minnesota will come to a realization in 2012 that it’s time to turn the reins of leadership and ownership, over to someone else. Where will today’s owners find the right person or team to make this transition possible? Our experience shows that succession can easily take five years or longer to envision, plan, select, develop and implement. And a lot can change over five years.

Join us March 13th to learn more about family and privately held succession plans. Using real case studies presented by Transition Resource Group members we will look at options for finding successors for your business.

With real situations as the catalyst, we expect lively questions and dialog around why and how these succession plans developed and were successful.

Our Transition Forum is confidential with voluntary participation. There is no obligation or cost beyond your breakfast each month. Trusted advisors are welcome when accompanied by a client or business owner approaching transition . . . someone who has moved from dreaming to worrying about how to step into real transition. Owners – bring your transition advisor!

The Transition Breakfast Series will be held at 8000 Norman Drive, Bloomington in the 2nd floor conference room (watch for Platinum signs). The event begins at 7:30 a.m.

Cost is $25 in advance or $30 payable at the door. Please e-mail Donna Gray with questions, or if you are unable to attend after registering. We hope you will join other business owners in learning from shared transition experiences.
